2021 Genesis G80 - The charming sedan is inspired by the GV80 SUV | Mini Auto

Starting price: $48,745

The idea of a Korean luxury automaker was the furthest thing from the public mind when Hyundai launched the Genesis sedan in 2009. But slow and steady progress has actually led to a Genesis brand. independent (started in 2017) and now a complete redesign of the midsize sedan that started it all.
The Genesis G80 2021 builds on the foundation of its predecessors, offering more technology, driver assistance and luxury features than ever before. Genesis has also given it the quad headlight design and large grille first introduced on the new GV80 SUV and the refreshed G90 full-size sedan.

From the unique twin headlights and huge pentagonal grille to the slick bodywork and sloping roofline, the all-new Genesis G80 2021 is a captivating beauty. It also earned a spot on our Editors' Choice list. The glamorous sedan is inspired by the company's new GV80 SUV, which has the look and feel of a premium luxury sedan but without the premium price tag. Both entries are Genesis' attempt to usher in a new era and elevate it as a burgeoning luxury brand like BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The G80 straddles the smaller G70 and the larger G90 sedans, and it's expected to compete with midsize luxury cars like the BMW 5-series and Mercedes-Benz E-class.

Furniture, Amenities and Merchandise
With a primary focus on a luxury vehicle, the G80 offers a truly premium interior. Its cabin features an elegant design with a streamlined dashboard, soft-touch surfaces, and rich materials. The steering wheel has an odd aesthetic, and the gearshift knob is never as intuitive as automakers think, especially when placed near other circular controls, but overall the G80's interior looks wonderful. The sedan offers desirable features such as a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, ambient interior lighting, head-up display, heated and ventilated front and rear seats, and more. The new G80 also has more headroom and legroom than the old model, which was also roomy at first.

A large 14.5-inch touchscreen rises from the top of the dashboard and serves as the hub for the G80's infotainment system. The display can be controlled via a circular control unit on the center console as well as buttons on the steering wheel and voice commands. Each G80 also comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A powerful Lexicon sound system with separate sound modes is also part of the infotainment setup.

Engine, transmission and performance
The entry-level G80 comes with a standard turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four making 300 horsepower. Buyers who want faster acceleration will want to opt for the more powerful twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 with 375 horsepower. Both engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear- or all-wheel drive. While we haven't had a chance to test the V-6 model yet, the turbocharged four-cylinder managed 5.7 seconds from 0 to 60 mph on our test track. The G80 offers a comfortable ride, easy steering and good brakes, but it doesn't feel as sporty as some of its rivals.

The EPA estimates the 2021 G80 with the base four-cylinder engine will earn 23 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. Opt for a more powerful twin-turbo V-6 that delivers 19 mpg city and 27 highway ratings. When we got the chance to run one on the 75 mph highway fuel economy route, as part of our extended test mode, we were able to gauge our real-world mpg. it.

The 2021 G80 is all-new and represents a huge step forward in terms of luxury over the 2020 model. It shares the platform and powertrain with the recently introduced GV80 SUV. The sedan also bears a striking resemblance to its tall riding counterpart inside and out, with a large front grille and unique exterior lighting as well as a clean and classy looking cabin.

The best value among the various trim levels seems to be the 2.5T Advanced, which adds some premium features that easily justify the price increase over the standard car. The Advance trim level comes standard with 19-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, three-zone automatic climate control, a power-adjustable trunk lid, and a 21-speaker Lexicon stereo system. All G80s come with rear-wheel drive as standard, but all-wheel drive is available at an extra cost.
