NIO delivered 6,711 vehicles in May 2021, a growth of 95.3% year-on-year. Deliveries included 1,412 ES8s, the Company's six- and seven-seat flagship premium smart electric SUV, 3,017 ES6, the Company's five-seat high-performance premium smart electric SUV, and 2,282 units EC6, the company's five-seater premium smart electric vehicle coupe. As of May 31, 2021, cumulative deliveries of ES8, ES6 and EC6 reached 109,514 vehicles.

In May, the Company's vehicle deliveries were adversely affected for several days due to fluctuations in semiconductor supplies and some logistical adjustments. A car you've probably never seen before, from a company you've never heard of - the ES6 is an electric SUV very similar to the Audi e-Tron, Mercedes-Benz EQC, Jaguar I-Pace and Tesla Model X.


Its maker, Nio, is a 5-year-old Chinese startup. You may have heard of the somewhat successful Formula E team, or that the EP9 hypercar held the Nurburgring EV lap record for two years (until VW beat it with the ID R). It employs 9,000 people - three times more than Ferrari, but a small fraction, such as Tesla's workforce of 45,000 - and is listed on the New York Stock Exchange. So it is one thing.


Although it has offices in Germany, the US and the UK, Nio (or Weilai - meaning 'Blue sky comes' in Mandarin) has not yet sold cars outside of China. But it will soon succeed: the seven-seat ES8 will arrive in Europe in 2021, and more models are sure to follow. The five-seat ES6 is the second model (excluding the EP9, which is not road legal and produced in extremely limited numbers) after the ES8. ES6, which has a lot in common with ES8, went on sale in June 2019.


'NEV' - 'new energy vehicle' - is big business in China. Nio is one of almost 500 NEV manufacturers registered there, but one of a very small minority that actually builds, sells, and distributes a handful of cars. Although overall auto sales are declining, sales of NEVs in China are still growing steadily. That said, the government has halved generous subsidies paid to manufacturers, putting pressure on the industry.

The Nio ES6 is a good car. In many respects, it's on par with its European rivals - the interior is comfortable, spacious and feels good, the infotainment looks slick and the powertrain is smooth, quiet and makes the car feel good This 2,345kg vehicle comes fast.

Another big plus is access to Nio's battery swap stations - something we wish someone could do in the UK. It's not all good, though - the ES6 isn't even a bit sporty, like the EQC, body control leaves much to be desired and for the most part it feels its considerable weight. But as a marker in the sand, Nio's second car, it's an impressive piece of kit.

Now, score. It's a hit, this one, because the Nio isn't available here and therefore no UK pricing or specs. We used a score of 6 because that's surprising, if a few areas are missing. Nio's charging ecosystem may have earned an extra point, but it's still unproven and, again, just a problem in China. If ES6 ever becomes a reality in Europe, we'll be happy to review our review and revise our scores accordingly. But for now - we can't say for sure if it's better or worse than comparable Audis, Mercedes or Jaguars.
