For those shopping for something that looks a little different than an average compact crossover, the truck looks of the GMC Terrain 2022 could prove to be eye-catching. But upon a closer look, neither its features nor its price push it to the top of the class. All models are powered by a tepid turbocharged four-cylinder engine and, unlike the brand's Yukon SUV, the Terrain's off-road capability is rather limited even with optional all-wheel drive. Buyers may swoon over a chrome Denali model, which sets it apart for the off-road from rivals like the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5 or Volkswagen Tiguan, but that top model comes with a premium almost luxury price.

Like its platform companion, the cheaper Chevrolet Equinox, the Terrain receives a styling refresh for 2022 that includes a revised grille and front bumper, new LED headlights and taillights, and wheel designs. New 18- and 19-inches, updated seat covers and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality. A stiffer-looking AT4 model joins the lineup while the base SL trim falls out. There was also a previously optional 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, leaving the 1.5-liter turbocharged engine as the only engine choice.

To keep the price of the Terrain from getting out of hand, we'll stick with the SLE model. It comes standard with many of the features compact SUV buyers will consider a must-have, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities, a touchscreen infotainment, and a host of driver-assistance features. .

Engine, transmission and performance
The standard Terrain comes with a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder with a nine-speed automatic transmission and front- or all-wheel drive. We haven't tested an engine yet, but we did put it through our test mode fitted to its mechanical version, the Chevrolet Equinox; It took 8.9 seconds to reach 60 mph. Terrain offers passengers a comfortable and difficult ride. While the soft suspension is a boon when driving on the highway, the comfort-oriented setting saps the driver's engagement when the runway becomes zigzag. Likewise, the direct but syrupy steering, which offers easy turns at low speeds, proves as uninformed as a mob boss in a police interrogation room.

Real-world fuel economy and MPG
EPA estimates the Terrain 2022 with front-wheel drive will earn 25 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway; four-wheel drive drops the highway estimate to 28 mpg. We're yet to put Terra through our real-world highway fuel economy testing but we'll update this story as we do. 

The spacious and accommodating interior is appreciated for its superior build quality and blend of materials. Meanwhile, the Terrain's ergonomically-challenged gearshift paddles sprinkle salt into the compact crossover's internal wounds. It includes some switches that look like power window controls, are located low on the center console and are less intuitive to use. While it's something that we think owners will get used to over time, we found the small buttons difficult to locate at a glance — especially when detecting reverse gear — making it difficult to navigate. making a quick three-point turn or operating the manual mode of the transmission. Terrain is an advantageous partner for transporting large loads of various sizes. There are standard 60/40 foldable rear seats, as well as front seats that fold flat. Topography' cargo area provides high-class competitive space. In our hand luggage test, the Terrain held 24 cases of folding the rear seats; Those looking for the absolute maximum cargo room will be better served — albeit only slightly — by the CR-V.

Easy to operate and responsive to commands, Terrain's infotainment system benefits from clear graphics, logical menus and the latest in-car connectivity features. Wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot are all standard. The navigation system in the dash is standard on the top Denali and is available on other models. A front-view display is available—it's standard on the Denali and optional on the SLT and AT4—but unlike other GM vehicles that project the feature onto the windshield, the Terrain uses a pop-up window on top. dashboard.
