2022 Kia EV6 interior & exterior Walkaround - headlines Kia’s nascent electric vehicle portfolio | Mini Auto

Starting price: $60.000

Kia continues to strengthen its role in the electric vehicle space with the unveiling of the new EV6 crossover. While the EV6 isn't the Korean automaker's first battery-powered vehicle, it's the first to go all-electric for power. Other Kia electric models, such as the Soul EV and Niro EV, are also available with a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain.

Like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV, the Kia EV6 runs on Hyundai Motor Company's Electric Global Modular Platform (or E-GMP), allowing the EV6 to come in rear- and all-wheel drive variants. Powering the rear-mounted or available front- and rear-mounted electric motors is provided by a 58 kWh or 77 kWh battery pack. Kia expects to achieve 300 miles of range for the EV6 with the big battery pack in the US, which is down slightly compared to the 316 miles of estimated driving range on Europe's WLTP combined cycle.

Unlike the Niro, the EV6 is designed to be an all-electric vehicle. It runs on a new platform co-developed with Hyundai Motor, the company's stable partner, specifically for battery-powered vehicles.

While the GT will be the top model in the EV6 range, it won't be the first to go on sale in the US.

The EV6 will also feature Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, allowing it to charge tools, laptops, electrical appliances, and even other EVs. An internal 110-volt electrical outlet will power the device, an adapter from the external charging port will handle other charging tasks, and vehicle-to-vehicle charging will act like an electrical outlet. 110 volts.

Many of these configurations are shared with the Hyundai Ioniq 5. Another similarity to the Hyundai is the funky exterior design. The EV6 was previewed by the Imagine by Kia concept 2019, which at launch was described as a commuter vehicle that combines elements of a crossover, a sedan and even a sports coupe . That's usually what we see in the EV6. Kia says the car is designed according to a new philosophy called Opposites United, which combines contrasting elements such as sharp lines with smooth, sculptural surfaces. Wheel sizes will range from 19 to 21 inches.

The EV6 measures about 185 inches long, 2.3 inches longer than the Ioniq 5, although its wheelbase is 3.9 inches shorter than its Hyundai counterpart. Meanwhile, rival Volkswagen ID.4 and Tesla Model Y have lengths of 180.5 and 187 inches, respectively. Its wheelbase is 114.2 inches, equivalent to the Telluride three-row SUV.

The body design and EV platform combine to give the EV6 plenty of interior space. It has 102 cubic feet of passenger room, 27.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, and 53.5 cubic feet of cargo room with the second deck folded flat.

The interior also features avant-garde design. There's a clean layout combined with textured surfaces and a mix of physical controls and screens. One of the outstanding elements is the curved screen that combines the instrument cluster and the infotainment center (both 12-inch screens). Below this you'll see the climate settings are also controlled via a screen, unfortunately.

The EV6 also has an augmented reality head-up display. The system displays warnings from the vehicle's electronic driver assistance system, as well as helpful information such as vehicle speed and turn-by-turn navigation instructions. The remote parking system also allows owners to control the vehicle in tight places from outside the cabin.

Available driver assistance systems will include an active blind-spot monitor, automatic emergency braking, driver attention warning, rear cross-traffic alert with brake assist, automatic high beams and automatic high beams. The system will control throttle, steering and braking in some highway situations.

Kia will debut here with a limited production run — 1,500 units only — the EV6 First Edition, priced at around $60,000 before any incentives, including a federal income tax credit of up to $7,500 .
