2022 Toyota Tacoma Trail Edition - Improves for Off-Road Chops | Mini Auto

The midsize truck gets a slight lift, a standard rear differential lock, new wheels and a new color.

Toyota Tacoma Trail Edition returns in 2022 with some notable changes. Based on the SR5 trim and entirely available with all-wheel drive and a Double Cab body style, the Trail Edition combines some adventure-ready touches to become today's best-selling midsize Tacoma. .

Most notable for the Trail Edition — and coming back in 2022 — are the built-in lockable bed storage compartments on both sides of the bed, with one even having double cooling. . There is electricity in the bed thanks to the standard 120 volt electrical outlet.

The Tacoma Trail Edition gets a slight lift in suspension for 2022, adding 1.1 inches to the truck's front end thanks to taller coil springs and 0.5 inches to the rear. The result, when combined with the removal of the front spoiler, is a pickup truck with 9.4 inches of ground clearance. All safety features of Toyota Safety Sense-P (TSS-P) are retained despite the presence of an elevator. Approach angle is now 34.0 degrees, departure at 23.6 and breakout at 26.4.

A standard towing package allows the V-6-only Tacoma Trail Edition to take full advantage of its 6,400-pound maximum towing capacity. Additionally, a locking rear differential is also standard and should provide the truck with extra traction in those slow, technical 4x4s you've - or haven't - seen coming.

Since wheels and tires play such an important role in tackling the less traveled road, the Trail Edition features new bronze-painted 16-inch TRD wheels wrapped in Goodyear Wrangler 265/70R16 tires. The setup increases the rail width by 0.5 inches for a more aggressive stance. Off-road skids borrowed from the Tacoma TRD Off-Road protect the Trail Edition's belly, keeping parts and moving parts shielded from rocks, merciless debris, and off-road rips. Figure.

The Trail version is capable, but also full of style. Black, sleek, modern badging returns for 2022, including a new Trail Edition badging on the rear doors. New hood graphics are also available. The heritage-inspired front grille, first seen on the Tacoma TRD Pro, carries bronze lettering to match the wheels. The black fabric seating on the inside is complemented by cool tan stitching.

A new exterior color, Lunar Rock, combines the previously available Army, Super White, and Midnight Metallic Black colors. Regardless of color, all Tacoma Trail 2022 versions have the same body color rear bumper.

Although Toyota is limiting pricing, last year's Tacoma Trail Edition started at $35,180 for the rear-wheel drive version and $38,255 for the all-wheel-drive version. Since the 2022 model is only available with all-wheel drive, we bet Toyota will price the latest Tacoma Trail Edition close to the price of last year's 4x4 model when it arrives in dealerships in the fall.
