Mazda CX-30 EV 2021: An electric small SUV launched in China | Mini Auto

Mazda's small SUV model ditches the petrol engine, with an electric version launched in China.

The 2021 Mazda CX-30 EV has been revealed for the Chinese market, with the Australian arm brand ruling out a local launch.

Unveiled at the 2021 Shanghai auto show, the CX-30 EV is just where the name begins: an all-electric version of Mazda's popular compact SUV, built by the Changan joint venture. Mazda's brand in Nanjing, China, dedicated to the local market. .

Powertrain details of the electric SUV are thin on the ground, but it is thought power could come from the same 107kW/271Nm electric motor and 35.5kWh lithium-ion battery pack as the MX-30 Electric , which allows a WLTP rating range of 200 km.

Some Chinese media claims the electric CX-30 can offer a range of around 400km (although it may have been tested under more lenient NEDC standards) and has an electric motor developing 300Nm, However, Mazda has yet to confirm such a figure.

Styling differences between the regular EV and CX-30 models are minimal, although placing the battery pack under the floor means the electric model runs significantly higher than its petrol-powered counterpart, with The increase is partially offset visually by the metal side steps, and the front and rear bumpers.

19-inch alloy wheels from the larger CX-5 fill the arches (up from the regular 18-inch), while the 'e-SkyActiv' designation features the vehicle's electric powertrain.

Meanwhile, the interior of the CX-30 EV remains unchanged from the current internal combustion model, retaining the 8.8-inch central screen and semi-digital instrument cluster.

The 2021 Mazda CX-30 EV will go on sale in China in the second half of 2021.

However, don't expect to see this model in Australian showrooms, as it is designed specifically for the Chinese market. Mazda Australia's electric vehicle rollout will instead be led by the upcoming MX-30, slated for a local launch around mid-year.
