The 2022 Nio ET7 electric sedan is ready to confront Tesla Model S in China | Cars in China

Electric vehicle startup Nio on Saturday unveiled its first sedan, the ET7, during the company's annual Nio Day showcase held in Chengdu, China.

Nio, commonly known as China's Tesla, has already taken orders for the ET7 and plans to start shipping in 2022. Pre-orders are limited to China but Nio has previously expressed a wish. expand to other markets.

The ET7 starts at 448,000 yuan (about $69,160) with the battery included or 378,000 yuan without the battery, in which case owners will have to register the battery.

Three battery options are on offer, the biggest of which is a new 150-kilowatt-hour unit that Nio boasts can deliver 620 miles of range. The standard battery is a 70-kwh unit good for about 310 miles and the mid-range battery is a 100-kwh unit good for about 435 miles of range. All figures are based on test cycles used in China and will likely be lower when rated using the EPA cycle.

Only one powertrain has been announced, a dual-motor system that makes 644 horsepower total and 626 pound-feet of maximum efficiency. Nio quotes a 0-62 mph time of 3.9 seconds for the ET7.

As is the case with other Nio vehicles, the ET7 can be replaced through Nio's network of dedicated Nio Power battery stations. You simply drive into the terminal and an automated system handles the swap. Nio has hundreds of battery replacement locations in China and has announced the rollout of a second-generation version of the system.

The ET7 is a large sedan, measuring 200.7 inches long, about five inches longer than the Tesla Model S, its main rival. Inside is a neat dash with one screen serving as the instrument cluster and another, vertically oriented, serving as the infotainment center. This can be controlled by a digital assistant called Nomi, which is powered by AI and responds to voice commands.

The Nio also matches the ET7 with the latest self-driving system called Nio Autonomous Driving, NAD for short. NAD is a complete self-driving system that combines the sensor technology, control software, and computing power that self-driving cars rely on to sense the world around them and decide what action to take. It's a powerful system that includes 33 sensor units including radar, lidar and high-resolution cameras, as well as four NVIDIA Drive Orin computers and a vehicle-to-infrastructure communication system. NAD is designed to process eight gigabytes of data per second.

Nio hasn't said how self-driving the NAD system will be at launch, though the company has mentioned highway driving, parking, and battery swapping as expected use cases. for ET7.
