Audi has revealed that its fully self-driving car that will hit the market in 2021 will be based on the Aicon concept car unveiled at the 2017 Frankfurt auto show.

The Aicon is a fully self-driving, all-electric vehicle with no steering wheel and pedals, and Audi envisions a future where the car can be celebrated in busy urban environments.

Urban environments with highly detailed maps are where Audi's first self-driving cars will venture out, with the automaker set to initially test a fleet of drivers in 2021. Audi has yet to mention it. location(s) where the crew will run and at what capacity.

"If all goes to plan, Audi will deliver a production self-driving car by the middle of the next decade," Peter Mertens, the automaker's R&D director, said in a statement.

Audi and the Volkswagen Group brands are working with Aurora Innovation of the US to develop self-driving technology. Aurora was founded in 2016 by engineers who worked on self-driving teams at Waymo, Uber and Tesla, and the company has worked with VW Group for the past year. It is also working with Hyundai and Chinese electric car startup Byton.

Waymo is currently at the forefront of self-driving technology as the company plans to start a commercial ride-hailing service with self-driving cars this year. The service will cover an area of 100 square miles in Phoenix, Arizona. The important thing is that the cars in this geofenced area will be able to operate on their own 100% of the time.
