ROEWE MARVEL R EV - Electric SUV on which the MG Marvel R is based.

MG Motor unveiled its Marvel R Electric SUV this week. Described by the company as "a luxury, high-tech 'lifestyle' SUV for the C-segment," the Marvel R Electric is essentially an export carbon copy of SAIC Roewe's Marvel R brand.

This “R” sub-brand was conceived to promote higher-end vehicles with sportier aesthetic designs, and these vehicles are marketed through a network of independent dealers in China.

The MG Marvel R Electric really seems to be high-tech, with a three-motor drivetrain (albeit "only" 212 kW (288 PS). One can only assume that MG Motor has opted for a three-motor setup. engine — one at the front and two at the rear — to integrate a smaller, more compact, and more efficient engine design into its BEV, but the company didn't provide a weight limit.

The Marvel R Electric boasts a peak torque figure of 665 Nm, (490 lb ft) and a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time of 4.9 seconds. According to MG Motor's press release, a rear-wheel drive variant will also be available; perhaps with a dual-engine setup to accommodate a front trunk.

MG Motor claims a WLTP range of over 400 km, and although battery specifications have not been provided, it is safe to assume that MG will share Roewe's total battery capacity of 69.9 kWh. There is also 11kW AC charging onboard and DC charging that can reach 80% SoC in 30 minutes. The MG does not provide DC charging rates, but from the above figure we can assume it will be around 100-120kW.

The MG Marvel R Electric is expected to launch in Europe from May 2021. We have contacted MG Motor Australia regarding availability and will update their response.

The car called Roewe Marvel R is a product of MG and Roewe is owned by SAIC in the country. The Roewe Marvel R is the successor to the Roewe Marvel X - the car that was shown at the 2020 Delhi Auto Show as the MG Marvel X - as the SAIC badges are the same under the MG and Roewe brands. This means that Roewe Marvel R can also be considered the successor of MG Marvel X.

According to a report on RushLane, the car is powered by a 69.9 kWh battery pack, which can travel a distance of 505 km on a single charge. The four-wheeler can accelerate from 0 to 100 in 7.9 seconds. As far as is known, it takes 12 hours to charge the battery. The car uses power from two equipped motors to produce 184 horsepower and maximum torque of 410 Nm. The all-new vehicle has 28 sensors for Level 3 autonomous driving.

In addition to all this, one of the key features of the new Roewe Marvel R is that it will also feature the first multi-mode chipset that will enable Media-to-Everything (V2X) communication. For the non-reversible version, V2X includes Vehicle-to-network, Vehicle-to-infrastructure, Vehicle-to-vehicle and Vehicle-to-pedestrian functions. The report also mentions that there are a total of 17 scenarios in which 5G C-V2X can be used on newly launched cars in China. Another benefit, which will probably increase vehicle sales, is that the 5G chipset can be used by V2X at low latency with minimal power consumption. The high-performance car will also have very sophisticated things like communication technology and Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities.
