2022 McLaren 765LT Spider First Look: Because You Can Go Fast Without a Roof | MiniAuto

 Starting price: $388,000 USD

The new convertible is much improved over the slow hydraulically operated folding roof of the 675LT, taking just 11 seconds to put away and out of sight (compared to 17 seconds for the 675). And while you can only fold the top down for a top speed of 18 mph in the 675, you can ramp it up to 31 mph in the 765LT Spider. The active rear wing has been repositioned on its own for maximum efficiency in both the top and bottom positions, meaning your rear space will not be negatively affected if you decide to set the runtime when the roof is lowered.

The sun on your face, the wind in your hair, and the endless air — these are the invisible joys that only a topless car can bring. Add the growl of a 755hp twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 behind your head, the sound of a four-pipe titanium exhaust at the rear, everything is track-tuned, and top speed is 205 mph and you get the recipe for the new McLaren 765LT Spider. It's likely the thinnest and best convertible we've seen in a long time.

The McLaren 765LT, the 720S's stripped-down, track-focused Longtail rival, was the third fastest car in our annual Lightning Lap test with a time of 2:38.4 around Virginia International Circuit . That was not its only achievement at VIR. It also hit the fastest we've ever recorded — 174.6 mph — up front. There's already a Spider convertible available to order, and like the coupe, it's limited to 765 units. Its carbon fiber one-piece retractable hardtop can be raised and lowered in 11 seconds (faster than the Spider 675LT) and can operate at speeds of up to 31 mph. McLaren says it offers more space than the Coupe, even with the hood up.

The Spider also has a power rear window that can be lowered even with the roof up like the 720S Spider (or Toyota 4Runner), and you'll have to pay extra for air conditioning or an audio system. McLaren says the 765LT Spider is 108 pounds heavier than the coupe.

Inside, the Spider is identical to the frugal coupe for a few new switches that operate the hardtop. As with many high-dollar supercars, production runs are limited. McLaren will only make 765 LT Spiders, and prices start at $382,500, and that's before you start experimenting with the multitude of customization options of McLaren's Special Operations division. McLaren will only produce 765 units of the 765LT Spider and is available to order now with prices starting at $388,000.
