2022 Hyundai Kona N Specs - Compact SUV with high performance | MiniAuto

Starting price: $ 20.950 USD

By now, you probably know the upcoming Hyundai Veloster N and Elantra N are affordable legal hot bars that help the company get the best front-runners in the business, including the Honda Civic Type R and Volkswagen GTI . The compact Kona N is made from the same mold, using the same 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission we just sampled on the 2021 Hyundai Veloster N. (Alas, there's no manual option for the Kona N.) It also uses the same front-wheel-drive layout, which is a bit of a disappointment, as we'd hoped for a little AWD action to take on the Volkswagen Golf R .

The Kona N is the second full-fledged N model to come to the US, though other markets have also received the compact i30 N, a version of the Elantra hatchback we get here, and more recently the smaller i20 N. It is one of the 18 N and N Line models Hyundai plans to offer through 2022. Hyundai promises an N or N Line model in every major vehicle segment it offers.

Like the Veloster N, the Kona N is powered by a 2.0-liter turbo-4. In the Kona N, it makes 276 hp and 289 lb-ft of torque, though the N Grin Shjft mode will up that to 286 hp for 20 seconds. Hyundai says the Kona N can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 5.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 149 mph.

Five levels of trim of the Hyundai Kona
The Hyundai Kona 2022 is available in five trim levels: SE, SEL, N Line, Limited and Kona N. All are small 2-row/5-passenger crossovers with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. cake. Both the S and SEL are well-equipped models, but performance buffs will appreciate the Hyundai Kona N Line and Kona Limited. For those who want to wait until the fall, the even more powerful Hyundai Kona N 2022 will arrive.

Prices start at $20,950 for the Hyundai Kona SE model and top out with the Hyundai Kona Limited and its price tag of $28,250. Hyundai offers free maintenance for all vehicles for three years or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

We love the value included in almost every Hyundai vehicle, but we think the Hyundai Kona N Line at $25,500 scores well for power and performance. That's a good starting point with a 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-four making 195 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. Order the all-wheel drive package for $1,500 and you'll get independent rear suspension as part of the kit. When paired with a 7-speed EcoShift dual-clutch transmission, it still costs $27,000.

All the 2022 Kona get a lot of styling changes and the Kona N has its own variations, with unique lightweight 19-inch forged wheels, fenders and fenders in the same body color, way unique grille treatment, red stripes along the bottom edges of the bodywork, and two large exhaust pipes protruding from the rear bumper. Exterior color choices include a new color called Sonic Blue, a variant of the Performance Blue that the Veloster N is available in. Inside, the Kona N gets an N-specific steering wheel, seats, interior trim and performance graphics at a glance for both the digital instrument panel and the head-up display. The Kona N also has the full range of safety and driver-assistance features from Hyundai.

Oh, and for those who want to join the show without having to go, Hyundai is offering an N Line version of the Kona, which gets a body color treatment and a number of other styling enhancements inside and out, with more pedestrian powertrains from the regular Kona. Don't worry — once you've seen both, no one will ever mistake Kona N for Kona N Line. Or anything else for that matter.

What kind of performance can we expect from the Hyundai Kona N 2022? We bumped the Veloster N automatic to 60 in a very fast 5.1 seconds. According to Hyundai figures, the Kona will weigh 3,340 pounds, a 93-pound difference from the Veloster N. (Note: In our testing, the Veloster N is lighter than Hyundai said). in terms of the Kona N's ultimate gear or gear ratio, but assuming they carry over from its hatchback sibling, we'd be surprised if the Kona N can't hit 60 in 5.5 seconds or so. less than.

Hot In New Ways?
Incidentally, the Kona N press release contains an interesting piece of information that the N series could evolve beyond gasoline engines to switch to electric and hydrogen fuel cell power. (Recall that when Hyundai announced the N performance sub-brand at the 2015 Frankfurt auto show, it did so with the N Vision 2025 Gran Turismo concept, powered by a hydrogen fuel cell.) Hyundai is gearing up to roll it out. the all-electric Ioniq brand with the upcoming Ioniq 5, and Hyundai has strongly hinted at an N electric vehicle using the E-GMP platform as the foundation for the 5. The company is also selling the powered Nexo now. hydroFCEV in California and is preparing to launch its own brand of fuel cell powertrains called HTWO (which can be a bit of a challenge, as the name is already being used for a $4-a-day brand of water). bottle). Given the body-flattening performance of Tesla vehicles as well as the Porsche Taycan and Audi E-Tron GT, an electric-driven Hyundai N sounds like an appealing prospect.

We are pleased to see Hyundai continue to spread the love of N to more models, and especially the Kona. While it's not the most family-friendly small SUV on the market, the Kona is notable for its sporty handling in both petrol and electric models, and we can't wait to see it. slip behind the wheel of this hot version.
