Kia UK revealed the Kia Soul EV Boardmasters Edition today, a 'recycled' pre-production car saved from a crusher to instead live through its days on the beach.

Redesigned with surfers in mind, the Soul EV Boardmasters Edition is a special vehicle created to mark the launch of Boardmasters 2021 in Cornwall (www.boardmasters.com). Kia UK is the automotive partner for the major surf and music festival, taking place on two stunning locations on the Cornish coast. A world-class music sequence comes to Watergate Bay, while exhilarating surfing competitions take place on Fistral Beach, home of British surfing.

Boardmasters runs from August 11-15, and Kia will be exhibiting the Soul EV Boardmasters Edition throughout the event for festivalgoers to discover for themselves.

This is the second time Kia UK has rescued a pre-production car from scrap to create something completely different. It follows in the footsteps of the powerful Kia Stinger GT420, first revealed in 2019 as a one-off race car.

However, the Soul EV Boardmasters Edition takes a different course, made for a more relaxing pace - and for those who refuse to go around in circles, nor are constrained by track limits, noise rules or lap times.

The zero-emission Soul EV represents the perfect vehicle for the project and aligns closely with the Chairman's sustainability ethos of sustainability and minimizing one's impact on the environment. The sponsor vehicle's 64 kWh long-range battery pack and 150 kW (201 hp) electric motor remain unchanged, but now power a vehicle packed with unique new features and special modifications. .

Designed for surfers

The Soul EV has stood out on the road thanks to its distinctive boxy design; The Boardmasters Edition car takes this to a whole new level. The original 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels and 215/55 R17 tires have been replaced with 16-inch bright white steel wheels and 265/75 R16 Maxxis Bighorn chunky sand tires, famous for their use in cross-country competitions. races and road races. With each tire increasing to 30 inches in diameter, this change alone necessitated a significant rework of the baffles and front footwells.

The fully independent suspension also features new custom adapters and revised struts, with three inches of lift to accommodate the new wheels and tyres. It also boasts a modest increase in rail width, from 1,565 mm to 1,675 mm at the front and 1,575 mm to 1,690 mm at the rear. The shape of the suspension has been adjusted accordingly.

Thanks to increased ground clearance (more than doubled, from 153 mm, to 310 mm at the front and 320 mm at the rear), thick tires and a high 395 Nm of torque from its engine, the car may perform better than standard. vehicle to overcome rough terrain and uneven ground on the way to the coast.

Substantial changes to the Soul EV's wheels, tires and suspension will likely affect the standard car's official 280-mile electric range. However, thanks to a 64 kWh battery pack and efficient engine, the Boardmasters Edition is still capable of offering greater driving range than some other electric vehicles at a similar price to the standard Soul EV.

One of the more striking features is its custom-built steel roof rack. Made from mild steel tubing - which can be easily recycled at the end of its life - the stand is handcrafted specifically for the Soul EV Boardmasters Edition to hold a pair of 7ft9 Tahe Bic Malibu surfboards. The shape of the rack and the relatively low profile allow the vehicle to avoid height-limiting factors while also allowing the tailgate to open fully to access the trunk. That said, the car's total height with the panels fitted is still 1,950 mm higher - 255 mm taller than the Kia Sorento, the largest car Kia sells in the UK.

The car retains the 'Neptune Blue' metallic paint and black roof, but also has a series of bright white decals running down the body. These shapes emphasize the bold shapes and straight lines in the car's design, and help it stand out even more.

Interior decoration

Modifications continue inside, with the Soul EV's rear bench removed to create something more practical for sea and sand tackle.

The boot area has been completely revamped, with the current 315-liter trunk expanded to take advantage of the Soul EV's entire cabin, up to the rear of the two front seats. With the rear seats removed, the larger trunk has been transformed into a spacious wooden deck, made from PEFC certified spruce (from forests sustainably managed according to strict international standards). ). Dyed white to give the cabin a light seaside feel, the deck also protects the cabin from moisture. Its surface also holds sand grains and prevents them from falling into hard-to-reach cracks between seats.

Opening the back door also gives you access to a folding bench, an outdoor seating made from reclaimed wood that provides somewhere to enjoy a drink with friends. This is accompanied by a swingarm, which extends out from the rear door from the roof of the cabin and provides a place to hang and dry a pair of wet clothes. Users can also hang towels from their arms, to create a slightly more private dressing area.

The panel rack is combined with a roof-mounted solar panel and a pair of Lazer ST4 Evolution LED positioning lights. Spotlights provide a powerful source of light for early mornings and late evenings at the beach, and are fitted in custom enclosures to protect them from the elements or potential damage when loading or unloading boards.

The solar charging system can also power a mini-fridge or other ancillary equipment with renewable energy while the driver is away from the vehicle. The system works independently of the car's main battery pack so as not to affect the vehicle's performance. Powered by a 12V entertainment battery and mains inverter, so it can power LED lights and other electrical devices without reducing the vehicle's operating range.

The front of the cabin remains unchanged from the standard car, giving the Boardmasters Edition a comfortable space for driver and passengers. It has the same 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, making it easy for drivers to navigate to places of interest. The car's standard 10-speaker Harman / Kardon premium sound system is also maintained, eliminating the need for drivers to bring their own portable speakers to the beach.

Soul EV at Boardmasters 2021

The all-electric Soul EV Boardmasters Edition will be on display at Kia's booth at Boardmasters 2021 from August 11-15 for visitors to see for themselves. It will be displayed alongside the Kia e-Niro, the brand's best-selling electric vehicle.

Kia's booth at Boardmasters, dubbed the 'Inspiration Zone', will host a series of sessions exclusively for festival visitors on surfing, yoga and fitness, in keeping with the brand ethos. Kia's 'Inspirational Movement' and festival themes.

Hopefully Cornish festivalgoers aren't too disappointed with this Kia, whose soul belongs to the beach. Unlike other special editions available for purchase, the Kia Soul EV Boardmasters Edition is truly one-of-a-kind. It's actually a pre-production Soul EV that Kia rescued from the crusher and revived for carnival life on the beach.
