2021 Smart Concept #1 - Small crossover to be made in China and based on Geely's Sustainable Experience Architecture | Cars Blog

Daimler and Geely have teamed up to reinvent Smart Brands. Concept #1 is the first of many electric cars to be born

Things have changed dramatically from 16 years ago when Smart is now a 50:50 joint venture between Daimler and Geely to revive the struggling city carmaker. The Concept #1 announced today not only heralds an EV-only future, but it also highlights Smart's goal of launching cars significantly larger than the pint-sized ForTwo and ForFour.

Smart is one of those lesser-known car names that you don't really notice. They're mostly known for the not-so-really worth mentioning ForTwo model, or the funky Smart Roadster, which could be a great car if it weren't for the brutal automatic transmission. However, now there may actually be valid reason to talk about Smart, as they introduced an interesting small crossover at the IAA Munich auto show, called Concept #1.

By all accounts, it looks like it will be a rival to the Mini Countryman, which in 2023 will have an EV version of its own. In terms of dimensions, Concept #1 is 4.29 meters (168.9 inches) long, 1.91 meters (75.1 inches) wide and 1.7 meters (67.0 inches) tall. The short overhang suggests a relatively long wheelbase, compared to the vehicle's overall length. As it happens, the Concept #1 sits on a 2.75-meter (108.2-inch) wheelbase. The sporty look is further enhanced by 21-inch wheels, slim LED headlights and taillights.

Smart Concept #1 was designed by Daimler - which becomes clear when you look at the dashboard design and is inspired by current Mercedes models, including the 12.8 central touchscreen inches. With that said, the compact crossover will be made in China and based on Geely's Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA).

Support for fast charging technology and over-the-air updates are promised, along with next-generation and long-range infotainment systems. Smart also says the production version will benefit from "the highest levels of dynamic handling", which suggests Daimler and Geely want to give the struggling company the allure of a powerful brand.

The production version of the Smart Concept #1 will first go on sale next year, in China and Europe. As that time draws near, we also hope to learn the actual name of the car, as well as pricing and performance figures.
