Starting price is about $55,000 USD.

When looking at the aggressive design of the 2022 Chevy Silverado ZR2, the strong styling will tell everyone this is not an ordinary half-ton pickup. While it's not quite as powerful as the Ford F-150 Raptor or the 700-horsepower Ram 1500 TRX, the ZR2 is the most formidable full-size truck in Chevy's showroom. Along with its intimidating looks, it also has a 420-horsepower V-8, rides on 33-inch-tall tires, and has a tricked-down suspension. The latter includes manifold spool valve dampers derived from Formula 1 cars and Baja racing trucks. Its interior is also decked out with a digitized dashboard, and its crew-only body style means everyone can enjoy the ride when the convertible is over. While it may not impress Ford and Ram fans, the 2022 Silverado ZR2 gives the brand the bow of being a great all-terrain vehicle.

The prototype Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 race truck has competed in 10 professional-sanctioned off-road races since 2019. Including the Vegas to Reno Best In The Desert race last month. The truck didn’t have any issues during the race with only having to stop to refuel.

Motorsports serves as the ultimate test bed for trickling down technology to a production vehicle, and the Hall Racing Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 race truck is no different. Shared with the production ZR2 is the basically the entire chassis and powertrian. This includes the 6.2L L87 V8 engine that 420 horsepower, sending output to the wheels through a 10-speed automatic transmission and two-speed transfer case. The front and rear differential, front skid plate, and transfer case skid plate are also shared components.

“It was exciting to help Chevrolet prove the Silverado ZR2’s off-road capability, hiding the prototype technologies in plain sight,” Hall stated. “The tests and refinements made over the past couple of years absolutely prove the adage that racing improves the breed – making the production Silverado ZR2 a strong, capable off-road truck.”

The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 may not have the chunky 35-inch tires and long-travel suspension that the Ford F-150 Raptor has. And it doesn’t have a supercharged V8 that the Ram TRX has. But what it does have is a racing pedigree that is battle tested and results-proven. And to us, that means plenty.

Under the ZR2's bulging hood is the same naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V-8 that's available in the regular Silverado 1500. The engine makes 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque and pairs with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Every ZR2 features a four-wheel-drive system with a two-speed transfer case and electronic-locking front and rear differentials. Stabilizing the truck's 18-inch wheels, which are shod with gnarly 33-inch off-road tires, is a specially tuned suspension that includes high-performance spool-valve dampers. The truck's underside is protected by a unique skidplate package, and Chevy says the ZR2's high-mounted steel bumper provides a 31.8-degree approach angle, which is more than what's offered on the similarly lifted Silverado Trail Boss models.

What does it take to build an off-road ready pickup? As for Chevy, they chose to race a prototype 2022 Chevy Silverado ZR2 starting in 2019 to develop the final production truck. According to Chevy, the prototype ZR2 Silverado race car competed in 10 professional off-road races, including the legendary Vegas race to Reno Best In The Desert. This unique development cycle is what makes motorsport so exciting for consumers.

Chevy hasn't said how much the Silverado ZR2 will cost when it goes on sale in the spring of 2022. Since its positioned as the lineup's flagship, we expect it to cost about the same as the top-of-the-line High Country model, which currently starts around $55,000.
