2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee - TYhree rows of seats, new version plug-in-hybrid 4xe | Cars Blog

Starting price is about $40,570 USD.

The classic Jeep Grand Cherokee was a mid-size SUV with two rows of seats. But Jeep reversed the scenario with the latest generation, introducing a redesign of the first fifth-generation SUV with a new three-row L model. The company is currently preparing to roll out a standard wheelbase version of the new model, and the 2022 Grand Cherokee will arrive in the US later this year to replace the upcoming 2021 two-row sedan currently on sale with New Grand Cherokee L.

The two-row model also sets it apart with a more spacious lineup that includes the Trailhawk all-terrain model and a plug-in-hybrid 4xe variant. These two configurations can even be combined into a single Grand Cherokee offering the opportunity to drive electric in off-road conditions. We've detailed the 4xe powertrain separately, but the basics remain the same as in the Wrangler 4xe: 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet in total from the turbocharged 2.0-liter in-line four-cylinder petrol engine. plus two electric motors. Jeep claims an electric driving range estimate of 25 miles per full charge.

The two-row Grand Cherokee has a wheelbase that's five inches shorter than the three-row model and nearly a foot shorter overall. But the styling is similar to the Grand Cherokee L except for some unique wheel design and trim differences. The rear end looks a bit more polished and has a floating pillar design.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Features

While there isn’t much information out on the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee, we can confirm it is set to receive a makeover for sure. There are numerous rumors flying around about the next-gen Jeep Grand Cherokee, the most exciting ones being the possibility of a hybrid powertrain option, and the introduction of a few more SRT trims.

While we cannot confirm our speculation, we are sure that Jeep will retain many of its trims from the previous model year. It should also retain the standard RWD for its V6 and V8 powered trims alike, with AWD available for around $2,000 to $4,000 more, except for the off-road-focused Trailhawk, which is only available with a 4x4 drivetrain.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Engine and Performance

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is expected to remain unchanged under the hood, but Jeep has also hinted at the introduction of a new plug-in hybrid powertrain to the potent engine options. The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee will be fitted with a 3.6L Pentastar V6 as standard that makes 290 horsepower and 257 pound-feet of torque. The more powerful engine option includes a 5.7L HEMI V8 that cranks out 357-hp and 390 pound-feet of torque.

The engine flows the power to the unconventional rear-wheel drive, while all-wheel drive comes as an upgradable option. Not to forget, the Jeep Grand Cherokee will offer distinctive trims; the Trailhawk trim should please buyers looking for intense off-roading capabilities, though it has not received a special mention of its arrival. For extreme performance yield, one would definitely fly towards the ridiculously powerful SRT and Trackhawk models.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee will equip several standard off-road features such as the legendary Quadra-Drive II 4×4 system with a rear electronic limited-slip differential (eLSD), a unique version of the Quadra-Lift air suspension specifically developed for the Trailhawk which offers improved articulation and total suspension travel, as well as a select-speed control with hill descent control. The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee will retain its versatile character that navigates the 2-row SUV on trails and still has outstanding on-road manners.

Unlike the Kia Telluride, the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee dominates its rivals with top-notch performance and much-lauded off-roading ability. The 2022 Grand Cherokee will remain to be a brisk SUV, again better than its rivals. In terms of riding and handling, the Kia Telluride has the best on-road manners, but the Volkswagen Atlas isn’t far from the same. But the GMC Acadia feels underwhelming with the least attractive power figures.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Fuel Economy

Don’t expect an SUV to fit a brawny V6, be highly capable on rough terrain, and also be economical at the same time. But the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee won’t cut a hole in your pockets. The standard V6 supports the buyer with quite a generous fuel economy. With no changes to the powertrain, the 2022 Grand Cherokee can be expected to deliver 19/26/21 mpg in city/highway/combined driving conditions. The same 24.6-gallon fuel tank will allow the Grand Cherokee to stretch 517 combined miles on average.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee won’t be the efficient SUV pick, especially against rivals like Kia Telluride, GMC Acadia, and Volkswagen Atlas. But note, that the margin isn’t huge and is a worthy trade-off for capabilities that the Grand Cherokee will be sated with.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Interior

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee will walk in the same footsteps as the recently introduced Grand Cherokee L three-row SUV, which is undoubtedly the first of the luxurious new generation. The upcoming 2-row is said to set its eyes in the luxurious territories too, so expect an opulent cabin with large screens.

Not much of the details have been a dig, but excellent materials, eye-sparkling styling cues, big infotainment screen. The FCA's new Uconnect 5 infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability might be the highlight of the interior.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee will remain spacious and comfy inside the cabin, but one would find the Volkswagen Atlas more roomy and refined. Similar is the case with the Kia Telluride and GMC Acadia in its range-topping Denali trim. But, we’d wait until the brand unveils the interiors completely.

Standout interior features of the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee

  • Available heated and ventilated front seats
  • Heated front seats
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Leather-wrapped and heated steering wheel
  • Driver seat memory function
  • Driver and Passenger power lumbar support
  • Uconnect infotainment software
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Safety

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is expected to offer Level 2 self-driving capability but would be held off till the end of the year, as in the case of the three-row sibling. Besides that, the 2022 Grand Cherokee will have all the previous safety and driver assistance features. An optional ProTech I package provides Blind-spot monitoring, Rear cross-traffic protection, and a Rear parking camera with parking assist. The ProTech II provides Forward collision mitigation, Active brake assist, and Lane departure warning.

The Advance Protech II provides additional safety with Adaptive cruise control, Perpendicular parking assist, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The SUV fits 7-airbags as standard. The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee will also carry over the robust and rock-solid chassis as the current model year. The safety ratings of the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee are great, but also marginal in some aspects. The NHTSA has not rated the SUV for 2021, but the IIHS has rated it with an average score.

Notable safety features offered in the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee:

  • Electronic Brake Assist
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Blind Spot Monitoring and Collision avoidance
  • Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keep Assist
  • Traction Control

Jeep has yet to announce pricing for the 2022 Grand Cherokee lineup, but we expect it to start several thousand dollars lower than the Grand Cherokee L, ranging from $40,570 for the base Laredo all the way up to $64,194 la for a Summit reserve. The Nonhybrid models will go on sale first in Q4 2021, while the Grand Cherokee 4xe will arrive in the US in early 2022.
