The new Mercedes-AMG SL, the new edition of an icon, returns to its roots with a classic soft top and sporty character. At the same time, the luxurious roadster as a 2+2 seater is particularly suitable for everyday use and puts its power down on the road with all-wheel drive for the first time. High-tech components such as the AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension with active anti-roll stabilisation, rear-axle steering, the optionally available AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system and the standard-fit DIGITAL LIGHT with projection function sharpen the sporty profile. In combination with the AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine, this results in a driving experience of the highest order. As a consistent Performance Luxury model, Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach has developed the SL completely independently. Two models with AMG V8 engines will kick off the market launch. Almost 70 years ago, a sports car launched in Stuttgart immediately became a legend. The vision of expanding the potential of the Mercedes-Benz brand through motor racing successes produced the first SL as a result – a road-going racing sports car. Shortly after its début in 1952, the 300 SL (internal designation W 194) reaped success after success on the race tracks of the world. In its first year, it achieved, among other things, a spectacular one-two victory in the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans and even took the first four places in the Nürburgring Grand Jubilee Prize for sports cars. Its successes quickly make the SL a legend.




The successful racing car was followed in 1954 by the 300 SL production sports car (W 198), which is called the “Gullwing” because of its unusual doors. In 1999, a jury of motoring journalists voted it the “Sports Car of the Century”. Other highlights of the model history include the “Pagoda” (W 113, 1963-1971), the evergreen R 107 (1971-1989), which was built for 18 years, and its successor, the R 129, which is considered an automotive sculpture because of its striking wedge shape. The abbreviation “SL” to this day thus stands for one of the few genuine automotive icons in the world.




In the decades-long development history from full-blooded racing car to open-top luxury sports car, the new Mercedes-AMG SL now sets another milestone. It combines the sportiness of the original SL with the unique luxury and technological excellence that characterise modern Mercedes models.

With its exciting design, state-of-the-art technology and outstanding driving characteristics, the new Mercedes-AMG SL sets standards in the luxury sports car segment. The exterior design fascinates with a perfect triad: It combines the modern Mercedes-Benz design philosophy of sensual purity with the sportiness typical of AMG and characteristic details. The two power bulges on the bonnet are just one of numerous reminiscences of the first SL generation. The interplay of light and shadow makes the overall appearance visually light and low. So it is clear at first glance that the new SL has returned to its sporty roots.




The design is also new inside and out. The SL removes the odd lines of the old model for a look reminiscent of a smoother AMG GT. No bulging fenders, no big wings, just a leaner and handsomer body that's less imposing but classically handsome than any AMG GT roadster. Inside, Mercedes calls the SL's cockpit "super similar," a curious term for a design defined by two giant screens. Mercedes says it refers to configurable displays and their digitized versions of analog displays. I think the SL interior looks great, although I don't want to invent phrases to describe what is essentially a variation on the already great S-Class interior.




The 4-seat interior is wrapped in leather and uses the latest MBUX infotainment system with a large portrait-oriented screen. Measuring 11.9 inches, the touchscreen tilts forward (12° to 32° inclination) for ease of use, and is joined by a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster as well as a touchscreen display. Head-up display with augmented reality technology.




As you'd expect from a premium Mercedes convertible, Airscarf neck heating with integrated vents in the front headrests is standard on the new SL. Vehicles will be equipped with an AMG Performance steering wheel and choose between standard electrically adjustable AMG sports seats or optional AMG Performance seats.





All-wheel drive is available for the first time in the SL, namely a 4Matic+ setup with variable torque distribution and an electromechanical-controlled clutch that links the rear-wheel drive permanently to the front wheels. The engine's output is sent to the road through a nine-speed automatic transmission equipped with launch control.



Optional on the SL 55 and standard on the SL 63, an electronically controlled limited-slip differential at the rear enhances traction and stability for rival BMW 8 Series Convertible during high-speed cornering. The roadster also benefits from rear-wheel steering to reduce revs and increase handling.




Both grades feature a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 and 9-speed automatic transmission, as well as all-wheel steering and all-wheel drive. The familiar V-8 has received some tweaks for its application in the SL, like a new oil pan, new in intake and exhaust ducts, and repositioned intercoolers. Active engine mounts are also available for the SL 55 and standard in the SL 63.




Peak power is 469 hp and 516 lb-ft in the SL 55 and 577 hp and 590 lb-ft in the SL 63. In either case, you're looking at 0-60 mph acceleration in the SL 63. cycle 4.0 seconds. While it is yet to be confirmed, a more powerful level featuring electrification is still a possibility.




There's no word on pricing, but the previous SL550 started at $114,545. The SL55 will probably cost more than that, but less than the previous SL63's MSRP of $155,995. First deliveries are slated for sometime in the first half of 2022.
