“While Kia moves purposefully toward electrification, we are further strengthening the Sportage lineup by adding a variety of options suited for all different kinds of customers,” said Sean Yoon, president and CEO, Kia America, Kia North America. “The tremendous success formula of our current stable of SUVs has been infused into every ounce of the new Sportage, transforming it into a leader of the pack with its cutting-edge design, adventurous capability and desirable in-car technology.”

The new design is a mix of sharp angles and organic curves, pulling elements from Kia's new "Opposites United" design trait that debuted on the EV6 electric crossover. At the front, the automaker's signature "tiger nose" rises above a large honeycomb air intake, flanked by Sportage's bold boomerang daytime running lights. At the rear, the grooved tail lights wrap around the corners, connected by a narrow strip above the brand's new logo.

The new Sportage is 7.1 inches longer than last year and the wheelbase is 3.4 inches longer; it is now 183.5 inches from bumper to bumper with 108.5 inches between the axles. The SUV is also taller and half an inch wider. The extra length frees up more legroom (now 41.3 inches) and extends cargo space to 39.6 cubic feet.

ENGINE 187 hp

The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine sits under the hood and is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with front-wheel drive as standard. All-wheel drive is available as an option on most trim levels, and interestingly, ground clearance also adds about 1.5 inches to the Sportage's ride.

Kia says it's "aiming" for 187hp, which is pretty vague as it could be the same 2.5L engine we've seen on the Sportage's similarly sized new Hyundai Tucson. Perhaps Kia hasn't perfected the tuning for this app yet - sister companies have been known to tailor their sharing platforms and technologies very differently - but it's more likely that the final figure will be the same. Tucson's 187 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy hasn't been finalized either, but Kia is hoping for an 8% increase over last year, putting the 2023 Sportage somewhere between 25-28 mpg combined depending on configuration.

The four-banger is the only powerplant announced for the US-market Sportage, but Kia promises that "information regarding additional powertrain availability will be shared at a later date." Will we see a more potent turbocharged variant, a hybrid version or a plug-in hybrid similar to the Tucson? Time will tell.

Trail-ready Sportage X-Pro

New for this generation are the "trail-ready" X-Pro and X-Pro Prestige models that enhance the Sportage's off-road performance a bit with 17-inch matte black all-terrain wheels shod with local tires. picture BF Goodrich. The Sportage X-Pro is also distinguished visually with stronger front and rear bumpers, side trim, glossy black exterior details and roof rails. There are also new multi-terrain driving modes, a heated windshield and washable nozzles and LED fog lights. The X-Pro can also have an optional two-tone roof. Meanwhile, the specifications of the X-Pro Prestige are further upgraded with LED projector headlights and 8-way power-adjustable ventilated front seats for the driver.

Kia will also continue to offer the Sportage with the normal trim-level structure, from the base LX and EX models to the sporty SX and SX-Prestige specs. There is also an X-Line model that has a more rugged look similar to the X-Pro but with 19-inch wheels and street tires.

Sportage X-Pro with many technologies

Inside, the Sportage features a curved dual-screen dashboard, linking a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster ahead of the steering wheel with a 12.3-inch infotainment display at center stage. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard along with the latest generation of Kia's onboard software. Drivers and passengers are also able to take advantage of Wi-Fi hotspot capability, optional wireless phone charging, and Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant integration. And like most modern cars, there are USB ports all over the place, including a set of ports molded into the back of the front seat headrests along with integrated coat hangers and bag hooks.

Every 2023 Sportage comes standard with LED headlights with high beam assist, lane keep assist, rear parking distance warning and forward collision avoidance with pedestrian detection. and ride a bike. A rear camera is standard, but a 360-degree camera system will be available as an upgrade. Other driver-assist features include Kia's Blind Spot Monitor camera, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, rear cross-traffic alert with brake assist and Button Shift capability Traffic for the forward collision avoidance system comes with various trim levels and packages.

Breakthroughs in pricing and trim levels have yet to be announced, but we expect we'll find out more as the Q1 2022 launch date of the 2023 Kia Sportage approaches.
