2022 Rivian R1S - Electric luxury SUV available with 5 or 7 seats | Cars Blog

Starting price is about $70,000

Essentially an SUV version, the Rivian R1S is an all-electric SUV aimed at consumers with an active lifestyle. Like its pickup brother, the R1S promises great off-road ability and up to three rows of seats. The foundation of the Rivian R1S is a skateboard architecture that mounts the battery under the passenger compartment, giving the SUV a low center of gravity. Like its pickup brother, the R1S has a ground clearance of 14.5 inches for better off-road performance. Rivian claims the R1S will offer excellent acceleration with acceleration to 60 in as fast as 3.0 seconds.

Prices for the 2022 Rivian R1S start at $70,000 for the base Explore model. Both the better equipped Adventure and Launch Edition models start at $77,500. In addition to a destination fee of $1,075, R1S has a document fee of $70.

An off-road upgrade is available for the R1S Explore (it's standard on the versions above) for an extra $2,000. Since this is a brand new model, it's hard to say what the resale value of the Rivian R1S will be.

The aesthetic reminds us of other premium off-road SUVs like the upcoming Range Rover and Jeep Wagoneer. One obvious difference between the R1S and its competitors is that the Rivian is electric. Important specifications for off-road enthusiasts like approach and departure angles have been carefully designed to ensure that this is going to be a pretty decent off-road vehicle. The adjustable suspension allows for a maximum ground clearance of up to 14.9 inches and a wading depth of 3 feet.

The exterior of the R1S is stylish, hinting at the high-tech interior and powertrain, and at the same time looks solid and suitable for outdoor environments. Some interesting paint options like Rivian Blue and Compass Yellow allow for some unique customization, as do a number of tire and wheel options. You can make your R1S look more capable off-road or on-road and this SUV will be a great fit for both.

Like the R1T, the R1S boasts a beautifully designed cabin with modern styling, leather upholstery, fancy wood trim and two large screens — one for the infotainment and the other for the driver gauge display. The front trunk has a capacity of 12 cc, a large rear storage compartment, a separate tailgate and a spacious third row of seats further increase the utility of the R1S. What you see here is a production model, so the futuristic exterior design and modern interior will remain intact at the start of R1S deliveries.

The interior seems to be very spacious in the first two rows. Third-row seating will likely be a bit tight, but perhaps more generous than the cramped third-row in the Tesla Model X. This Rivian also has tons of cargo space (especially in the 5-seater models). This is thanks in part to the "frunk" with 11 cubic feet of space plus 5 cubic feet of rear storage. Maximum total cargo space is large with seats that fold flat up to 108 cubic feet.

The horizontally mounted infotainment system uses expandable tiles for individual features with key options (navigation, media and climate control) always available at the bottom of the screen. Instead of diving into submenus, options slide off the edge of the tiles to reduce system complexity. Rivian hasn't announced information on other infotainment features yet, but we expect Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot.

2022 Rivian R1S is generously equipped with standard features. These include a 300km or more battery pack, 5 or 7 seats no difference, vegan leather seats (with front heating), a lumbar-adjustable driver's seat, cloth headrests, recycled textile floor mats and electric rear doors.

One of our favorite standard features on every R1S is the Driver+ suite of safety technologies. Driver+ enables hands-free driving using technologies such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist and driver alert monitoring.

If you upgrade to the Adventure, a number of additional features become standard, including Off-Road Upgrades, Rivian Elevation by Meridian audio, ash wood interior trim, perforated vegan leather seats perforations, heated and ventilated front seats, lumbar adjustment for driver and front passenger, yellow interior accents Compass, recycled microfiber headboard and Chilewich floor mats.

The Launch Edition is equipped similarly to the Adventure model, but with a special Launch Edition badge, optional Launch Green paint color and included wheel upgrades.

The 2022 R1S shares the battery pack, powertrain, variety of styles and specifications with its pickup brother R1T. With up to 800 horsepower, the R1S boasts a claimed 0 to 60 mph time of 3.0 seconds, so we can't wait to grab one for a test drive. The R1S has an electric motor in each wheel, giving it all-wheel drive and impressive off-road capabilities. All models will ship with adjustable air suspension at launch and can vary ground clearance from 8 to 14.5 inches. When we get a chance to test drive the R1S, we'll update this story with driving impressions and test results.

All versions of the R1S have all-wheel drive, with an electric motor in each wheel; All of them will be able to tow more than 7700 pounds. We think towing will severely affect driving range, so those who plan to do this often should consider the model with the largest battery. The R1S has a payload capacity of 1800 pounds.

Rivian will eventually offer two different battery packs on the R1S, but the Launch Edition comes with a 135 kWh pack. Rivian says that this package will provide about 300 miles of driving range. A larger, 180 kWh battery pack will be available as an option starting in 2022, and it will come with a claimed driving range of around 400 miles.

The Rivian R1S 2022 sport utility vehicle carrying seven people will be the second production vehicle for Rivian, a new electric vehicle manufacturer based in Michigan. The Rivian R1S is aimed squarely at the Tesla Model X, which is the only three-row electric SUV currently available. The R1S will also be cheaper than the Model X when it goes on sale.
