2023 Mazda CX-50 - US-only SUV | Cars Blog

Starting price is about $27.945

The CX-50 will also have enhanced all-wheel drive, which we hope won't dilute the exciting driving factor that so many Mazdas are known for. Its coupe-like rear also competes with more crossovers, including the BMW X2.

The new 2023 CX-50 is a solid all-wheel drive crossover designed for the US, so while it won't be sold elsewhere, it still gives us a strong indication of what SUVs are coming. What the brand's next generation - the CX-60 and CX-80 - will look like when they arrive in the UK.

The familiar 2.5-liter inline-four that will be under the hood, both naturally aspirated and turbocharged, will likely produce around 187 hp and 250 hp as in the CX-5. A hybrid model will join the lineup later, but Mazda has yet to share details about that powertrain beyond saying it will feature Toyota's hybrid setup. On the other hand, Mazda claims that no parts shared between the CX-50 and the smaller Toyota Corolla Cross are produced in the same factory.

The CX-50 is offered with multiple driving modes to suit different conditions, and its design makes no secret of its off-road advantages. Narrow headlights, a wide front grille, and smooth bodywork are all prime examples of the brand's 'kodo' design language, but the CX-50 adopts a more aggressive stance than its predecessor. with other Mazda SUVs.

Mazda is presenting the CX-50 as an off-road SUV with a higher ground clearance than the CX-5 and availability of solid styling accessories, but it's still a monolithic crossover and based on a horizontal architecture. like the Mazda 3 and CX-30. Mazda says it's slightly longer than the CX-5 and claims it has more room for rear-seat passengers. The vertical architecture and six engines in Mazda's upcoming lineup won't appear until the larger CX-70 and CX-90 crossovers make their debut.

The CX-50's styling showcases this rugged edge with lots of black plastic cladding around the wheel wells, front and rear bumper trim that looks like skid plates, and black and silver wheels. It's also available in a trendy tan exterior color called Zircon Sand, and the models pictured here come with accessories including roof racks, hood graphics, and optional off-road tires. Aside from these add-ons, we like the sleek, square shape and modern headlights and taillights and think the CX-50 looks even better than the already stylish CX-5.

The CX-50 is a five-seater and from what we can see of the interior, it has a similar dashboard design to other Mazda models. A touchscreen mounted in the upper part of the instrument panel is controlled by a knob on the center console. The more expensive trim levels feature luxurious materials like leather upholstery, a nice brown color, and a panoramic sunroof will be optional. Like other Mazdas, we expect the CX-50's cabin to tend to be closer to premium quality than many of its main competitors, including the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.

The CX-50 is the first of several Mazda SUVs to be launched within the next two years. The first will be an extended range-topping rotary engine version of the MX-30 EV crossover in the first half of 2022. This is followed by the larger CX-60 and CX-80.

The CX-60 will be a five-seat SUV, while the CX-80 offers seven seats. The pair will be built on an expandable platform and powered by a four-cylinder petrol engine with hybrid assistance. A new Skyactiv-X inline-six petrol engine with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology will also be available, along with a 48-volt diesel option. From 2025, Mazda plans to launch a number of electric vehicles on a dedicated EV platform, possibly including another SUV.
