Kia India has officially lifted the curtain for the production-ready three-row Carens MPV ahead of its 2022 launch. The vehicle offers both six- and seven-seat layout options.

Launched in 1999, the Kia Carens is now moving into its fourth generation with a significantly different character as it is no longer considered a pickup truck. Announced today in India, the "Entertainment Vehicle" adopts styling cues that are certainly rooted in crossovers in order to appeal to customers who prefer the more practicality of a minivan that can't be found. in an SUV. Speaking of which, it's basically based on the same platform used by Seltos.

You're not alone in thinking that the headlights and taillights resemble those of the latest Sportage, while the chunky plastic cladding on the wheel arches signifies the Carens' newly achieved outdoor styling. Its nearly flat roofline maximizes headroom inside the cabin, where the car will be offered with six or seven seats. The old configuration will have a captain seat for the middle row.

It measures 4540 mm (178.7 in) long, 1800 mm (71 in) wide and 1700 mm (67 in) high, with a wheelbase stretched at 2780 mm (109.4 in) - the longest in the segment. That makes it larger than its predecessor in terms of overall length, but the distance between the axles has been increased significantly to provide more interior space. It's as wide as the model it replaces while being slightly taller.

As for the interior, the car has a wraparound dashboard complemented by a glossy black dashboard. It looks much more modern and follows in the footsteps of recent Kia models by combining a fully digital driving display with a 10.25-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system. You still get separate controls for the climate settings, along with quick access to other functions thanks to traditional buttons.

With 64-color LED ambient lighting, an air purifier and ventilated front seats - the new Carens is far more refined than the old model. It also has support for over-the-air updates and an eight-speaker Bose audio system, as well as a sunroof, selectable driving modes, and a host of standard safety kits: Hill Traction Control, Assist System brake, Downhill brake control, and more. For an additional cost, it can be equipped with front parking sensors and automatic windshield wipers.

The Kia Carens will be available in both petrol and diesel engine options with multiple drive modes. Both engines will be available in multiple powertrain options.

Especially the 1.5-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine, which makes 115 horsepower and 144 Newton-meters (106 pound-feet) of torque. Stepping up to the turbocharged 1.4-liter engine, you get 140 hp and 242 Nm (179 lb-ft). There's also a 1.5-liter diesel with 115 hp and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft). The base gas engine has a six-speed manual transmission, but a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is optional for the turbo. As for the diesel engine, it sends power to the wheels via a six-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

Kia will sell the all-new three-row Carens in India and other markets from Q1 2022.
