Mazda North American Operations has released its November sales results in the US, and for the first time in its monthly report, it has listed the all-electric Mazda MX-30.



The car has been offered since September, but the Japanese company did not include the MX-30 in the September and October reports. 55 units last month and a total of 120, which means 65 in September-October .

Mazda's first all-electric vehicle, the MX-30 SUV, has a stylish exterior and a simple cabin, but doesn't offer the right driving range. The sharp exterior design offers a coupe-like roofline and a rear hinged tailgate similar to that found on the electric BMW i3. The EV Mazda SUV comes with a 30.0 kWh battery pack, good for a driving range of up to 100 miles; a 143-hp electric motor drives the front wheels, and acceleration isn't nearly equal to EV rivals like the Chevrolet Bolt, Ford Mustang Mach-E or Tesla Model 3, all of which offer more than twice the range Mazda driver. At first, the MX-30 will only be offered in California before expanding to other states.


Not only is the MX-30 an all-new model from Mazda, but it also marks the first time the Japanese automaker has tested an all-electric powertrain. It's about the same size as the current CX-30 crossover, but borrowing the MX-5 Miata's MX nomenclature, which is a clue that the MX-30 offers ready handling and a fun nature.

The MX-30 is offered in base and Premium Plus versions, but its price tag is higher than that of mainstream rivals like the Bolt and Nissan Leaf. The Premium Plus version adds a lot of equipment, including active blind-spot assist, forward cross-traffic alert, 12-speaker Bose stereo system, heated steering wheel, 360-degree external camera system, etc

Compared to other electric vehicles, the MX-30's 30.0 kWh battery pack is small. The EPA estimates its driving range will be only about 100 miles per charge, less than half that of the Bolt and Kona Electric. The battery will be able to charge on standard AC power as well as faster and more modern DC chargers.

At the front, the MX-30 has a smaller grille compared to the rest of the automaker's crossovers. Looking at its sides, you'll see the model's most interesting design feature: the free-standing door. Like last year's RX-8 sports coupe, the MX-30's truncated rear doors swing out on rear-mounted hinges, helping to maintain the car's two-door and coupe-like styling while providing rear seat access. When set up for my 5-foot, 10-inch driving position, I was even able to get in and out of the second row of seats without moving the front crate.



The MX-30's cabin uses natural and sustainable materials such as cork and breathable fabric upholstery made from recycled plastic bottles. Front row space is enough for two adult Americans, but the rear seats are much more cramped, both in terms of head and legroom. The floating center console goes with the trend and frees up storage space behind the digitized display that adjusts the car's climate control system. Mazda is offering a host of features as standard on the MX-30, including heated front seats, a 7.0-inch digital display screen, a power sunroof, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, and more. Cargo space behind the MX-30's rear seats isn't really spacious, so Costco runs may require folding the rear seats flat.



Infotainment and connectivity
In addition to the digital dashboard for the MX-30's climate control and vehicle settings, an extra 8.8-inch screen from the dashboard includes infotainment features such as the audio system, navigation, and more. and backup camera. The MX-30 uses Mazda's latest infotainment interface, which is already available in three sedans and hatchbacks, and offers both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Personal opinion
The MX-30 won't be for everyone, but Mazda seems to know it. The automaker's debut was as gentle as the performance of this model, which was limited to California for the first five models and to just about 560 units. Next year, sales will open in all 50 states with the launch of the PHEV version. Packing more range and potentially less conservative performance, this release might be worth the wait.


The Mazda MX-30 2022 starts at $34,645 for the base version or $37,655 for the Premium Plus upgrades. That includes a $1,175 destination fee, but not any potential state or federal EV incentives or discounts that could bring the model's profits below the $30k mark.

At this price point, the MX-30 has to compete with the Nissan Leaf Plus and Chevrolet Bolt EUV, both of which have a range of over 200 km for the money along with more interior space. If the MX-30 felt more enjoyable to drive, I think I'd be willing to forgo its short range and fewer duties. But it's not, so I can't.
