Four years after its launch, the Skoda Karoq is updated: the Czech automaker has refreshed its second line of SUVs to ensure continued success. In addition to a more refined design language, the update brings sustainable materials, new technology and more efficient engines from the current generation of EVOs to the compact SUV. The updated model retains the four-lamp layout used by Skoda crossovers, but the daytime running lights in the upper cluster now have a two-level design. The new front bumper has an air curtain that reduces drag and is connected to a redesigned windscreen at the rear. Above this is a larger spoiler, completing the subtle changes to the exterior styling. However, these tweaks have a noticeable effect on the aerodynamic efficiency of the new Karoq, reducing the drag coefficient by 9% compared to its predecessor.

Fitted with aerodynamically optimized alloy wheels ranging in size from 17 to 19 inches, the drag coefficient has been reduced to 0.30, a 9% improvement. Even the fuel tank is slightly different now, while the front grille is wider than before to give the Karoq a more rugged look.

Skoda also made some changes on the inside as all trim levels get a digital instrument cluster as standard equipment. The cheaper ones have 8-inch screens while the higher-end models have larger 10.25-inch screens. There are four infotainment systems to choose from, the largest of which is 9.2 inches and supports over-the-air updates.

The cabin has been revised with sustainability in mind by introducing a new Eco package that includes vegan seat covers, leather-like materials and a small patch on the armrests in Mocca Brown. Extended ambient lighting in 10 colors and illuminated footboards in white will be available with the upgraded Karoq, along with a choice between chrome trim and piano black depending on the version.

Depending on the trim, the Karoq gets new seats that Skoda claims offer more comfort. This includes a power-adjustable passenger seat with memory function for the first time, while electric lumbar support and the VarioFlex system allowing for a 40:20:40 split rear seat will be two options.

Practicality remains unchanged from its predecessor, with the new Karoq offering 521 liters of trunk space. This capacity increases to a maximum of 588 liters when selected with the VarioFlex layout, while up to 1,605 liters with the rear seats folded or 1,810 liters when removed completely.

Skoda has also enhanced the Karoq's technology, with a choice of two digital displays now available. An eight-inch unit is standard with a 10.25-inch unit available as an option or on higher trim levels.

The touchscreen infotainment unit is familiar, with an eight-inch Amundsen unit as the base system. There's a top-of-the-line 9.2-inch Columbus setup while all systems feature radio map updates for the sat-nav. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard, while a wireless phone charging case is available as an option.

Karoq's engine line-up includes five Evo-branded units that deliver higher performance and lower CO2 emissions than the old car. The range starts with a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder TSI turbocharged petrol engine. This serves up 108bhp and 200Nm of torque and is mated exclusively to a six-speed manual transmission that drives only the front wheels.

Skoda's 1.5 TSI turbo four-cylinder has active ring technology that cuts two of the cylinders under light load to improve performance. This unit delivers 148hp and 250Nm of torque and is available with a six-speed manual transmission as standard or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic as an option.

The top-of-the-line 2.0 TSI petrol engine has this transmission as standard, sending 187hp and 320Nm of torque to all four wheels.

A choice of two 2.0 TDI diesel engines is available, both offered with a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed DSG transmission. The higher 148hp model also boasts all-wheel drive if you opt for the DSG transmission, while the lower power model has 114hp and up to 300Nm of torque in form. hand number. The DSG models only boast 250Nm. Exact efficacy information remains to be confirmed.

The company's second best-selling model in 2020 and the first half of this year after the Octavia is expected to go on sale in early 2022 in Europe. Like with the Kodiaq upgrade, the Karoq will not be offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain as Skoda has previously said that only the Octavia and Superb will continue with a PHEV setup as they are popular models.

The price of the new Karoq has yet to be revealed, but we anticipate a slight increase from the £24,520 list price of the upcoming 1.0 TSI SE Drive model after sales begin in 2022.
