Zeekr, Geely's luxury brand, will develop self-driving cars for Waymo | Car Blog

Waymo has partnered with Zeekr, the luxury brand of Chinese automaker Geely, to develop 100% autonomous vehicles specifically for their fleet. Affiliated with Google, Waymo is currently the only driverless taxi platform in the United States. Up to that point, the company had only used Chrysler retrofitted pickup trucks as service vehicles.

Waymo had hoped to announce the partnership during CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas next month, but pulled out of the event following the development of the Omicron Covid-19 variant in the US. Currently, no date has been set for the launch of the full-sized autonomous vehicle, although the company has shown 3D renderings of the minivan, designed at the Chau Vehicle Technology Center. Europe in Gothenburg (Sweden). By the way, it should be remembered that the city in Sweden is home to Volvo, one of the brands controlled by Geely.

With a futuristic look, the vehicle designed by Zeekr for Waymo has four sliding doors. Because the structure has no B-pillars, the front door can slide forward, while the rear door swings backward. The floor is low and the interior space has two rows of seats that can accommodate up to five passengers.

Minivan to be introduced "in the coming years"

In its official statement, Waymo said that "while [the vehicle] offers a level of safety in line with US federal vehicle standards, passengers will one day have an interior without a steering wheel and pedals, plenty of legroom and reclining seats, screens and chargers within easy reach, and a comfortable, easy-to-configure cabin. According to the company, the Zeekr line of small trucks will be introduced on the roads "in the coming years".

The company also makes it clear that the project shown in the images is illustrative and that the design will, in fact, only be revealed once the car hits the assembly line.
