2022 ABT Audi RS 3 provides 440 HP of power output (324 kW) and a maximum torque of 520 Nm

Until 2011, the S3 was Audi’s most powerful representative in the compact class.Since 2021, the third generation of the "Hot Hatch" has been on the road, but it is also available again as an elegant saloon.

Even in its normal state, the RS3 is equipped with enormous 400 HP (294 kW) and 500 Nm - but this can also be significantly improved: by visiting ABT Sportsline.

In the "escalation stage" ABT Power S there are proud 460 HP (338 kW) and 540 Nm. The sporty compact RS3 shoots from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds - an impressive 0.2 seconds off the standard.

Aficionados are aware that the "S" always refers to an additional mechanical component, so in addition to the self-developed control unit ABT Engine Control (AEC) there is also an intercooler on board. As a lower-priced alternative, ABT Power is available with AEC only. This option provides 440 HP of power output (324 kW) and a maximum torque of 520 Nm.

If desired, the RS 3 can even become a member of the "Club 300": we also offer the option of significantly increasing the electronically controlled top speed.

The world’s largest automotive aftermarket and performance parts specialist for Audi and VW installs its legendary high-tech ABT Engine Control (AEC) in the RS 3 on request. “The software has been specially adapted to the vehicle by our experienced team and tested on the road and on the test bench in countless hours of work. A comprehensive package of engine protection measures and warranty services ensures driving pleasure without remorse,” explains managing partner Hans-Jürgen Abt. A whopping 460 HP (338 kW) are on the data sheet after the “ABTgrade” and not only there. The performance-enhanced vehicle takes an impressive 0.2 seconds off the standard 0 to 100 km/h sprint, which is now completed in 3.6 seconds. If desired, the RS 3 can even become a member of the “Club 300”: ABT Sportsline also offers the option of significantly increasing the electronically controlled top speed.

Audi hasn't said how much the 2022 RS3 will cost, but we expect it to start just under $60,000. Once we learn its official starting price and learn how much its optional equipment costs, we can recommend the ideal configuration to buy.

Inside, the RS3's passenger space is identical to the A3 and S3, but it has a set of more aggressively bolstered front seats. Audi endows all versions with a dashboard that looks anything but bland. A pair of high-mounted air vents face the driver and flank the instrument panel binnacle that houses a set of digital gauges. The RS3 is also available with a heads-up display. Below the center touchscreen are climate controls with physical buttons, and there's a bin below them that's integrated into the center console. Unfortunately, drivers have to select gears via a weird, stubby shifter; paddles on the steering wheel are an alternative once the RS3 is in motion.

One of the most distinct elements of the RS3 is its unusual five-cylinder engine. Its odd number of cylinders give it a unique thrumming soundtrack that was particularly pleasing on the outgoing model. The latest iteration is again a turbocharged 2.5-liter, but it now makes 401 horsepower. The engine pairs with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that deliberately downshifts with slight throttle inputs, but it behaves less aggressively during hard braking. Its standard all-wheel-drive system includes a torque-vectoring rear differential with a drift mode. Unfortunately, getting the RS3's tail to kick out requires dedication and can be difficult to maintain. Compared with the lesser A3 and S3, the sportiest 3 has upgraded brakes, a stiffer suspension setup, and a unique set of wheels on stickier performance tires. The RS3 we drove produced exhilarating sounds, and the car's feisty nature was evident at the racetrack. Plus, it was composed and comfortable when driven sedately on regular roads.
