Actually, the R5 from Renault is a "68", even if the car was presented to the public in January 1972. The driving force behind Project 122 (as the R5 was called during its development) was Bernard Hanon, who was responsible for planning at Renault in the late 1960s. Before that, he was a professor of management at the University of New York, where he recognized the young generation's dissatisfaction early on. Which would later culminate in the 1968 movement.

After his return to France, he convinced the Renault executives that a car with a new concept was needed for the younger generation on the one hand and for women on the other. “The structure of households has changed. The women work, travel and obviously need a small multi-purpose vehicle,” says Hanon. The technical basis was provided by the R4, but the new car was supposed to be much smarter and more stylish. And only have two doors and a tailgate. This provided topics for discussion with the dealers who did not believe in the concept. But Renault went through with the idea of ​​the three-door.

The design was entrusted to Michel Boué, a student of Raymond Loewy. In his work, Boué also benefited from the fact that he was able to do without the classic bumpers and instead equip the R5 with innovative plastic bumpers. Which was good for the chic appearance of the car. The practical approach that the little Frenchman was supposed to offer also meant that the trunk was exactly as big as the capacity of a shopping trolley.

In January 1972 the time had finally come and Renault presented the finished car. And the R5 was a success from the start. In fact, in such a way that Renault had trouble processing all the orders, and corresponding delivery times were the result. In fact, a third of the orders came from young customers and a third from women. But the R5 should soon become a car for all generations, regardless of social positions. In 1974 it was the second best-selling car in Europe. Price in Austria: approx. 50,000 schillings.

Interesting offshoots soon followed for the R5. As early as 1972, i.e. shortly after the market launch, the R5 was electrified in cooperation with the French electricity company EDF. 100 copies were made, whereby the battery not only degraded the car to a two-seater, but also had to be installed via its own hatch in the roof. The range was modest at 60 kilometers. The turbo version of the R5 with a mid-engine, presented by Renault in 1978, caused quite a stir. And that with the impressive power of 160 hp for the time. In 1978 the R5 also had the automatic option and in 1979 the five-door version was also added later.

In the mid-1980s came the switch from the classic R5 to the new generation "Super-Cinq" - with designer Marcello Gandini largely remaining true to Michel Boué's original design. The Super Cinq was produced until 1996. A total of around 9 million R5s were built from 1972 to 1996.

And the story goes on: From 2024 there will be another R5, then electric.
